Con Edison wants projects totaling at least 200 MW in New York City and Westchester County. O&R is looking for projects totaling 10 MW.

The project is on land leased from Edwards Air Force Base. Mortenson is the EPC contractor, First Solar is supplying the solar modules, and LG Chem and Samsung are supplying batteries.

Researchers have been keen to make the technology work as it offers a cheaper, more environmentally friendly alternative to lithium-ion products.

Almost all of the new capacity has yet to be built, with the new contracts putting Central Coast Community Energy, Silicon Valley Clean Energy total joint signings well over 1 GW.
