Former EPA officials call for moratorium on natural gas in NC – “A Duke University professor, one of the world’s leading experts on highly potent, short-lived greenhouse gases including methane, will join with 27 former EPA officials to release a letter on Thursday urging North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper to place a permanent moratorium on new natural gas infrastructure in the state. At a press teleconference this Thursday, Dr. Drew Shindell will extend that call to all U.S. governors and utility leaders, saying that expanding the use of natural gas (methane) runs counter to global greenhouse gas reduction targets and that the climate and public health costs of methane are far too high. Charlotte-based Duke Energy, the nation’s largest electricity provider, plans to build the equivalent of 30 large natural gas-fired power plants over the next 15 years in the Carolinas alone.” Source: NC Clean
