Virginia utility’s resource plan needs more solar and storage, says trade group

The trade group Advanced Energy United called on Virginia regulators to reject Dominion Energy’s proposed resource plan because it lowballed renewables and storage. The Sierra Club said 15 GW more solar and 5 GW more storage by 2038 would be optimal.

Also on the rise: California ends summer with 5 GW energy storage record. Sunnova secures $3 billion Department of Energy loan. And more.

Storm readiness: Shifting from generators to energy storage systems

Fossil fuel-powered generators are strapped with emission concerns, maintenance needs, and potential personal risk, whereas a battery-based energy storage system is safe, efficient and has a very low operating cost.

Sunrise brief: U.S. energy storage sets Q2 high water mark

Also on the rise: Not all ‘lithium-ion’ batteries are dangerous. Solar industry should focus on virtual power plants, says DOE’s Jigar Shah. And more.

U.S. energy storage sets Q2 high water mark with 1.7 GW / 5.6 GWh

Wood Mackenzie said the U.S. market will install 66 GW of storage between 2023 and 2027, 83% of which will be at the grid scale.

Solar industry should focus on virtual power plants, says DOE’s Jigar Shah

With the days of solar net metering “numbered” and more utilities looking to deploy virtual power plants that compensate owners of distributed storage, industry veteran Jigar Shah sees virtual power plants as a route to industry success.

Not all ‘lithium-ion’ batteries are dangerous

As the energy storage trend unfolds, stories litter the media landscape about lithium-ion batteries catching fire, and even exploding. It’s a valid concern, and the time for consumers to understand a basic truth about lithium-ion batteries is long past due.

Sunrise brief: U.S. energy storage deployments to exceed 10 GW this year

Also on the rise: Nextracker opens steel manufacturing facility in Las Vegas. Briggs & Stratton launches new lithium iron phosphate battery packages. And more.
