Energy Storage

Sunrise brief: Google deploys ‘dragon scale’ solar shingles at its Silicon Valley campus

Also on the rise: Large format modules are gaining market share and presenting a new set of challenges, Honeywell and Duke will jointly test a flow battery, and Sunnova will offer EV charging through a partnership with ChargePoint.

Should I include a battery with my home solar project? Part 1

Honeywell, Duke Energy partner on flow battery test project

The battery, which uses an electrolyte to convert chemical energy into electricity for storage and deployment, will begin testing in 2022 at Duke Energy’s Emerging Technology and Innovation Center in Mount Holly, North Carolina.

Enphase launches microgrid-forming microinverter line

The IQ8 solar microinverters are capable of forming a microgrid during a power outage using only sunlight, providing backup power without a battery. The systems also allow any size Enphase battery to be paired with a solar system.

Sunrise brief: Consumers can drive decarbonization faster than utilities, study says

Also on the rise: Ohio officials approve more utility-scale solar, SCE will add 2,150 MWh of energy storage, and large format modules are headed for standardization in a move driven by a Chinese trade group.

SCE to add 2,150 MWh of battery energy storage

The California utility contracted Ameresco to install the battery energy storage systems that are slated to be online next August.

How varied energy storage can enable a low-cost renewable energy future

Analysis from NREL shows that high-renewable operation is possible, and less expensive, when a variety of energy storage technologies are used.

Early results of utility scale solar+storage revenue models

Adding batteries to solar increases revenue in different ways in different places.

Sunrise brief: Calculating the economic lift offered by community solar

Also on the rise: Polysilicon prices are likely to stay high as a ‘crazy year’ extends into ’22, Hawaiian Electric is seeking energy and capacity, and the latest landfill-hosted solar array enters service.

RFP alert: Hawaiian Electric is seeking up to 95 MW of capacity

Storage paired with solar must support the net nameplate capacity for at least four hours and support 365 full charge/discharge cycles each year.
