The legislation aims to limit the growth of energy storage in a state where a booming renewable market is lowering the need for natural-gas peaker plants.
The United States FERC project pipeline data shows that solar could feasibly push out natural gas as the number one electricity source by 2030.
The Southern California Gas Company has agreed to a settlement of $175,000, without admitting fault, to cease claims that their gas is ‘renewable’. The company will also update its website to clarify that only 5% of its gas comes from renewable sources.
While electricity pricing continues to rise due to natural gas pricing in 2022, some locations are starting to see pricing fall, implying that base electricity pricing and escalators in financial models may be out of touch with reality.
The Georgia Public Service Commission approved Georgia Power’s Integrated Resource Plan, which calls for 2 GW of natural gas and 2.3 MW of renewable energy. Plus, the REC program Georgia Power participates in may negatively impact renewables buildout.
Also on the rise: Minnesota’s value-of-solar law helps protect consumers from rising natural gas prices. Massachusetts bill would eliminate clean energy choice. And more.
Texas could meet the state’s energy needs by replacing coal with a fraction of what is proposed in solar and wind, according to Rice University researchers.
The company’s 2022 IRP includes plans to retire all coal units by 2035; add nearly 2,400MW of natural gas and 6,000MW of renewable capacity, as well as 1,000MW of energy storage in that same time; and begin distributed energy resource and income-qualified community solar pilot programs.
Solar and wind will grow, but coal will again be cost competitive, reversing what EIA said was a trend observed over recent decades.
Renewables have now crossed the 25% threshold of total U.S. available installed generating capacity.
