As the White House encourages utilities to use advanced conductors to help interconnect new renewable generation, the federally-owned utility Bonneville Power is moving slowly to use the high-capacity conductors, analysts said.
Federal regulators should consider specific reforms to improve transmission planning, lower interconnection costs and provide cost certainty, says a group affiliated with the Solar Energy Industries Association.
Reforms to siting, permitting, and transmission were requested by a coalition of about 200 solar and energy storage companies.
By agreeing to limit exports to the grid at peak generation hours, distributed energy resources like rooftop solar and energy storage can now avoid delays and costly infrastructure upgrades.
The Solar Automated Permit Processing Plus software platform has helped local governments approve nearly 33,000 solar projects.
Solar Energy Industries Association and Wood Mackenzie report estimates that 33 GW of solar was added in 2023. Despite economic challenges in the near future, solar is expected to be the largest source of generating capacity by 2050.
Also on the rise: EV adoption can help curb urban air pollution. Battery prices down 14% this year. And more.
Part of a century-old European group, BayWa r.e., spoke on interconnection challenges, transparency, and the enduring vision needed to navigate gigawatts of interconnection queue positions.
Also on the rise: A western National Parks EV charging network, a residential heat pump turbine, lessons learned from battery energy storage systems, and more.
“The reality is that without adequate electric grids and processes in place to connect this new wave of electricity supply with demand, it will be hard, if not impossible, to reach our clean energy goals,” writes Jeff Perry of Agilitas Energy.
