Solar Frontier Americas, the U.S. subsidiary of Japan’s Solar Frontier, announced today that it had broken ground on two large-scale U.S. solar PV farms totaling 107 MW of forthcoming capacity from its development pipeline.
The CIS solar specialist has embraced the downstream market with increased gusto in recent months, and these two projects – with Blattner Energy as the EPC – are two sizable strings to its U.S. bow.
The largest of the two is the 67 MW Midway I solar farm, located in Imperial County, California. The Midway II solar farm, nearby, is 40 MW in size. Both have PPAs secured, the former with Pacific Gas & Electric (PGE) and the latter with the Imperial Irrigation District.
Both solar farms will also feature single-axis trackers, supplied by NEXTracker, to improve yield, with Power Electronics supplying the inverters at both sites. The overall management of these projects falls to Solar Frontier Americas Development, which is the subsidiary’s large-scale development division.
“Solar Frontier has developed an extensive U.S. project development pipeline of over 400 MW and has rapidly established itself as a reliable and bankable player in the solar development industry,” said Solar Frontier Americas Development CEO Charles Pimentel. “We are pleased to now start construction of Midway I and Midway II; two solar power plants that will deliver economical, clean and renewable energy.”
According to Imperial County supervisor Ryan Kelley, the projects will generate “hundreds of direct jobs” during the construction and post-installation phase.
