MECCA, CA (February 26th, 2019) – Sunpin Solar, a California-based solar developer, hosted a very well attended ribbon cutting event on February 15th, 2019 at the ColGreen North Shore Solar Power Plant (“Project”) in Mecca, California.
Members attending and guest speakers included local government officials Steven Hernandez, Chief of Staff to 4th District Supervisor V. Manuel Perez, District Representative for Senator Stone, Field Representative for Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia, Jan Smutny-Jones, CEO of Independent Energy Producers, Henry Martinez, General Manager from Imperial Irrigation District, Lance Henderson, Director, Western Origination Direct Energy, Tom Li, CEO or Sunpin Solar and Mr. Peng, President, China National Building Material Company President & Chairman of the Triumph Group and many other esteemed guests.
Situated on 485 acres of land in the city of Mecca, CA, near the Salton Sea, the project has been operational since January 2019. The Project is interconnected to the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) utility grid and has delivery capability into the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) territory.
“The goal by 2045 in California is to have an electricity sector that is 100% clean. A large portion of that is going to be renewable energy, and a large portion of that renewable energy is going to be delivered by solar projects, such as this Sunpin Solar’s ColGreen North Shore solar project here in the Coachella Valley,” stated Jan Smutny-Jones, CEO of Independent Energy Producers.

Sunpin Solar and Direct Energy Team recently announced a renewable energy power purchase agreement (PPA) for the full output of the recently completed the Project. This agreement is one of the first instances an energy service provider (ESP) has enabled a project of this size in California.
The Project has an expected annual production of over 210,000 MWh’s, which would be enough solar energy to power 22,300 homes per year and displaces the CO2 equivalent of over 100,000 acres of trees and will offset greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of over 32,000 vehicles driven each year. The project created 425 local jobs at the peak of construction in an area classified as disproportionately burdened by pollution and with population characteristics more sensitive to pollution by the CalEPA. “It is projects like this that helps evolve structures that help corporations and customers alike meet renewable targets,” commented Lance Henderson, Director of Western Origination for Direct Energy.
