AUSTIN, Texas – November 27, 2018 – The Honorable Stephen L. Johnson, former administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and an advocate for new technologies that eliminate toxic materials, will chair the Advisory Board for Tydrolyte LLC. The newly created advisory board will assist Tydrolyte LLC in its mission of replacing toxic sulfuric acid in the $40 billion-dollar lead battery market with a better performing, non-toxic substitute. Johnson will advise the company on regulatory pathways for its novel Tydrolyte electrolyte to achieve an Environmental Preference Approach, which is an important step toward industry adoption. This will enable Tydrolyte to help battery manufacturers reduce worker health hazards and environment risks by eliminating the need for millions of gallons of sulfuric acid.

Johnson was the EPA administrator from 2005 to 2009 during the George W. Bush administration. He was the first and only career scientist to lead the agency. Johnson received a master’s degree in pathology from George Washington University and has received the Presidential Rank Award, the highest award that can be given to a civilian employee of the U.S. federal government.

“Since leaving the EPA I have focused my energies on solving problems I wasn’t able to solve at the agency. I am passionate about working with new technologies that can eliminate chemicals that are toxic to people and our planet,” said Johnson. “I am pleased to assist Tydrolyte in their mission to replace sulfuric acid in lead batteries with their better performing, less hazardous substitute.”

Batteries are recognized as a critical technology to reduce pollutants and CO2 emissions from both the power generation and transportation sectors. Lead batteries are the most widely-used battery technology globally, have an unmatched safety record, and are the most recycled post-consumer product in the world with recycling rates over 99 percent in the U.S. and Europe.

Johnson said there is an opportunity to build upon these successes by further improving the environmental sustainability of lead batteries, making the batteries even safer. “Eliminating potential worker exposure to toxic sulfuric acid would be a desirable step forward,” he said.

Tydrolyte CEO Paul Bundschuh said Johnson’s expertise will help the company achieve its mission. “Stephen is a well-respected expert on hazardous chemicals, their impact on people and the environment, and their regulations. With his help we are another step closer to replacing sulfuric acid in the global lead battery industry which would eliminate hundreds of millions of gallons annually of this toxic, carcinogenic material.”

Bundschuh also said industry adoption of its electrolyte could bring about significant performance improvements, lower manufacturing costs, and offer environmental benefits. “Our novel Tydrolyte electrolyte has been demonstrated to reduce corrosion and water loss, thereby extending the operational life of lead batteries. We believe that by eliminating the regulatory cost burdens of using sulfuric acid we can offset most – if not all – of the incremental material costs of using our material,” he said.

About Tydrolyte LLC
Tydrolyte LLC has exclusive global rights and was established to commercialize the novel, patent-pending Tydrolyte™ electrolyte in lead battery and other battery applications. Tydrolyte is a novel, safe, and superior performing electrolyte solution for automotive, motive, and stationary storage lead battery manufacturers. Tydrolyte is a less hazardous, drop-in replacement for toxic sulfuric acid in lead batteries that can eliminate regulatory cost burdens. It may also improve performance by extending battery life through lower water loss and corrosion, as well as increasing efficiency and charge acceptance through lower DC charge resistance. It can be easily adopted by lead battery manufacturers without additional capital expenses or production technology. For more information or to see our results, visit www.tydrolyte.com.
