The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens has selected FreeVolt USA, a global solar manufacturer with its United States headquarters in Palm Desert, to replace its ten-year-old solar display with a modern, state-of-the-art exhibit. FreeVolt USA, will both design and construct the display.

“The Living Desert has been a significant landmark in the Coachella Valley for nearly 50 years. Out of several applicants, we are honored to be selected to work with them on this project,” said Mohamed Kastiro, FreeVolt’s CEO.

FreeVolt will construct a new 5.4-kilowatt ground-mounted photovoltaic system across from The Living Desert’s Discovery Center. The display will include educational plaques explaining different aspects of solar technology and the environmental benefits it creates for the local habitat, as well as the global ecology.

While the main purpose of the exhibit is engagement and education, it will also be a fully functional solar system, generating a portion of the power necessary to run the Discovery Center. Interactive displays will allow park guests to view the solar production in real time.

“Solar is one of nature’s most abundant resources, providing clean, renewable energy to power large communities and our very own Discovery Center,” said Allen Monroe, President/CEO of The Living Desert. “We’re proud to partner with an innovative company like FreeVolt in order to showcase its capabilities, and educate our visitors.”

The project is scheduled for completion by the end of September and will be on display for a minimum of two years.
