TerraSol Energies Enlists ESS, Inc. to Provide Energy Storage Applications for Sycamore International Project

CHADDS FORD, PENNSYLVANIA – TerraSol Energies Inc. has selected ESS Inc., a manufacturer of long-duration iron flow batteries for commercial and utility-scale energy storage applications, to deliver an ESS Energy Warehouse™ flow battery at a commercial facility in Pennsylvania. This project is being built for Sycamore International, a technology purchasing, recycling, and data destruction company. The design includes a 110kW roof mounted SunPower solar array coupled with ESS’s 75kW/400kWh flow battery.

“Sycamore International is a highly discerning, environmentally conscious customer that wants a clean and reliable long-duration energy storage solution paired with solar to ensure smooth operations and security at their facility,” said Dave Santoleri, President of TerraSol Energies. “The ESS Energy Warehouse delivers the right combination of performance, value, and long operating life, at a superior total cost of ownership.”

Santoleri stated that TerraSol is moving into a solar-plus-storage segment of the solar industry and plans to use ESS Inc.’s long-duration iron flow batteries because they are the safest and most cost-effective battery storage currently available on the market.

“Solar energy and batteries work well together,” Santoleri said. “Solar charges an energy storage system and continues to work during power outages getting people through utility outages and system failures.”

“Power outages have a huge impact on our business – costing upwards of $40,000 per day in lost revenue,” said Steve Figgatt, CEO of Sycamore International. “We needed a solution that would ensure long-duration backup power when needed, with a favorable ROI and no safety issues. ESS’s iron-based flow battery offers the right combination of safety and sustainability with long asset life to match the expected life of our solar power system.”

With a focus on growing similar opportunities in the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland, Santoleri believes implementation of solar power and energy storage will reduce costs for both mid and large-scale business operations alike.

“There really is no limit to how or where this technology can be used,” Santoleri said. “It can be customized for schools and universities, as well as any size business or organization. The alternative would be to use lithium batteries for storage, which have both environmental and fire safety concerns along with limited life, or to install a generator, which emits greenhouse gases and requires a source of fossil fuels.

“Solar power with the ability to store it for future use strengthens the infrastructure of our power grid,” Santoleri continued. “With large scale storage, there is no limit to how much solar power can be utilized. ESS Inc.’s iron-flow battery allows power to be stored for future use, or to participate in frequency regulation, which helps stabilize the grid.”
