Cadenza Innovation, a provider of energy storage solutions based on disruptive architectures for lithium-ion battery packs, today announced that Founder and CEO Dr. Christina Lampe-Onnerud will be a featured speaker at the NY-BEST Annual Energy Storage Technology Conference 2016. Focusing on the latest technological advances, research development and commercialization efforts in fuel cells, batteries and energy storage technologies, the event will be held on Thursday, October 20, at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown.

Among the world’s foremost authorities on battery chemistry and design, Dr. Lampe-Onnerud is a 20-year battery industry expert. She is a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer; has shared insights into energy storage and climate change at Davos and for various United Nations groups; is an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Hall of Fame winner and MIT Technology Review Young Innovator award recipient; and has earned multiple distinctions for her commitment to environmental sustainability.

The New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology (NY-BEST) Consortium is a non-profit organization established with initial support from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). An industry-led consortium, NY-BEST’s mission is to catalyze and grow the energy storage industry and establish New York State as a global leader in transportation, grid storage and electronics.

Helping further cement New York as an innovator in sustainable energy, last month New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio committed to the City’s first ever energy storage deployment target of 100 megawatt-hours (MWh) by 2020. Notably, lithium-ion battery technology is instrumental in harnessing the full potential of renewable energy, including solar power.

At the NY-BEST Annual Energy Storage Technology Conference, Dr. Lampe-Onnerud will present “Growing an Energy Storage Company in the U.S.: Advice from an Expert.” During the 9:15 a.m. EDT keynote, Dr. Lampe-Onnerud will share insights on developing a successful battery company — from research, to startup, to full commercialization, and ultimately, major industry player. Attendees will also learn how the founder of Boston-Power — one of the world’s fastest-growing lithium-ion battery manufacturers — has incorporated her own best practices in establishing her latest battery technology venture, Cadenza Innovation.

As announced in July, Cadenza Innovation is bringing to market a safe, low cost and high-performance technology platform for licensing to lithium-ion battery manufacturers worldwide. Exiting stealth mode supported by more than $5M in oversubscribed Series A funding, the company’s first target markets are transportation and residential/grid energy storage. Development of the Cadenza platform has been funded, in part, by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), the U.S. Department of Energy (Award Number DE-AR0000392) and NYSERDA (Agreement Number 70422).

“Lithium-ion batteries have been around for decades and are a proven portable energy storage solution,” said Dr. Lampe-Onnerud. “But, the widely publicized problems of the Samsung Galaxy Note7 bring us back to the basics. As an industry, we need to apply the same focus and priority to safety as we do to higher performance and lower cost — all three must have an equal seat at the design and manufacturing table.”

“Cadenza Innovation was founded on this guiding principle and the reason we incorporate fire retardants into our core design,” Dr. Lampe-Onnerud added. “I’m honored to join other industry and academic leaders and share my experiences to help shape the future of energy storage innovation.”

Dr. William Acker, Executive Director of NY-BEST said, “NY-BEST is delighted to have Dr. Lampe-Onnerud as a keynote speaker at our Annual Energy Storage Technology Conference. She brings a wealth of expertise and experience in battery technology and growing a business from a concept into a global company. Our diverse audience of entrepreneurs, industry leaders, startups, researchers and students will gain a number of insights from her participation in the conference. As one of the members of NY-BEST’s esteemed Board of Directors, Dr. Lampe-Onnerud is a tremendous asset to NY-BEST and our network seeking to grow the battery and energy storage industry in New York.”
