Community solar site proposed for Duck Island, NJ – If at first you don’t succeed, try again. That’s exactly what New Jersey regulators are looking into after the idea to develop a solar project, this time a community solar project, was proposed. The 146 acres would provide accessible solar for low-income customers, which is the main idea driving approval for the project. Source: Press of Atlantic City

Hawaii’s nifty solar trash cans – Here at pv magazine, we love solar in all forms, that should be apparent. However, Hawaii’s solar-powered trash cans may have just taken the cake, at least for this writer, of favorite uses of solar. The cans have a built in compactor, powered by solar panels on top, which senses when trash has reached a point of filling and activates compaction. Source: KITV4

Even niftier Dutch-made solar floating homes – “Dutch architectural firm +31Architects has designed a series of solar-powered houseboats, with plans to complete the first prototypes by the end of the year in partnership with German manufacturer WSM Die Wohnschiff-Manufaktur… Solar panels and solar collectors will be fitted on the roofs of the homes, which according to the designers can generate enough energy and warm water to render the houseboats fully self-sufficient when moored.” Source: New Atlas

BlueCross BlueShield Chattanooga HQ to get 10,000 solar panels – BlueCross BlueShield is the latest corporation to go big in the renewable energy game, as the company announced that it will be adding 10,000 solar panels (roughly 4.3 MW) to it’s Chattanooga, Tennessee headquarters. This will become Chattanooga’s second largest solar installation, behind the 9.5 MW array up at Volkswagen’s assembly plant, which went active in 2012. The solar generation will provide a 25% offset of the facility’s electricity usage. Source: Times Free Press

6 MW battery systems in Arkansas – Well would you look at that, Arkansas is back in the news again. Now, the state is deploying two 6 MW energy storage systems in the city of Fayetteville, on the Paul R. Noland Wastewater Treatment Facility and the Westside Water Treatment Facility. Battery storage is new territory for Arkansas, making these twin projects particularly interesting. In fact, these will become the state’s first solar + storage projects. Source: T&D World

Dynapower releases GEN4 Utility Scale Energy Storage Inverters: CPS-1500 and CPS-3000 – The company, whose manufacturing facility in South Burlington, Vermont pv magazine recently visited is focused on scaling itself to keep up with significantly increasing demand for its manufacturing and design expertise. “The CPS®-1500 and CPS®-3000 are cost-effective, reliable, and efficient utility-scale energy storage inverters offered in both indoor and outdoor configurations. Featuring a highly-efficient three-level topology, Dynapower’s CPS® inverters are air-cooled and designed for four-quadrant energy storage applications in both grid tied and microgrid applications. Multiple CPS® units can be paralleled together to scale to meet the needs of any energy storage installation.” Source – Dynapower
